Thinking about becoming an Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT)?
This is a fantastic and rewarding career with great career prospects. Becoming an EMT means that you will be dealing with life and death situations on a daily basis. So, if you think you can handle the stress and high pressure, then this is a career for you. In order to be qualified EMT, you will need to undergo some form of EMT training.
EMT Training
To become an EMT, the very first thing you need is a high school diploma. This is the prerequisite into most emergency medical training programs.
To become an EMT, there are three levels to the training course:
- EMT basic training
- EMT intermediate training, and
- EMT paramedic training.
EMT Basic Training
This training program covers numerous emergency skills and should give you a basic level of preparation. You will learn about how to assess a patient for various types of respiratory and cardiac issues, drug overdoses, choking, childbirth, asthma attacks as well as how to deal with trauma cases.
In order to successfully pass this basic training you will need to pass a written and practical exam by either the state or the NREMT (national registry of emergency medical technicians).

EMT Intermediate Training
EMT intermediate is the next level of EMT training. It requires about fifty to three hundred and fifty hours of training as you are taught a lot more in depth information. You will learn all about the various medications and how to use defibrillator machines and other airway devices.
The exact requirements to pass this stage varies from state to state, so depending on which state you live in, will determine what you will need to know to pass.
EMT Paramedic Training
This is the third and final stage of EMT training. It is the most advanced level and you will learn about anatomy and physiology. Usually this training is done at a community or junior college and can be part of an AS degree.
Becoming an EMT is a rewarding and challenging career. To be a successful EMT you will need a level head to deal with high pressure situations, basic lifesaving skills, and also as good communication skills. This is because you will need to pass on critical information to doctors about the status of the patient.
