The basic level of EMT training in the state of Wisconsin lasts for about one hundred and sixty five classroom hours including lab time. Students will learn how to handle basic emergency situations that include assessment of patients, stabilization of patients, treating traumatic situations, transporting patients to the hospital and knowing the basic anatomy.
Prospective EMT students that take the basic level training course will know, at the end of the course, how to properly operate emergency medical equipments. In addition, the student will learn how to maintain those emergency medical equipments. It is mandatory that students observe emergency room situations under the supervised attention of the nurses and doctors in the hospital.
For individuals who are interested in becoming an EMT, requirements include possession of a high school diploma or GED, must be 18 years or older and must hold a CPR certificate. Schools that offer EMT training must be approved by the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services (DHFS).
Once the student completes the training program, the student has to take a state appointed practical test as well as a national written test to be certified as an EMT. Students are allowed to take the exam three times only and must successfully pass the exam with a score of at least 70%. Students in the state of Wisconsin must take a refresher training course every two years to maintain their certification.
