In the state of Vermont, students who are interested in becoming Emergency Medical Technicians have to enroll in an approved training program by the state’s Department of Health division. In the state of Vermont, EMT training is referred to as FR-ECA training. All training programs must meet the curriculum objective guidelines according to the Department of Transportation. The curriculum for the basic level training includes approximately forty hours of training in didactics. Some cities in the state of Vermont have additional guidelines and prerequisites that are more than what is offered as the minimum requirement in other cities.

When a student completes the training, he or she will be issued a FR-ECA certification that will last for 2 years. If you want to become a FR-ECA (First Responder-Emergency Care Attendant), you must be at least sixteen years of age, must have successfully completed a training course that hinges on the national standard of first responder curriculum within the last two years and have a high school diploma or GED.
Students must hold a certificate also in CPR before they can enter the training. Classroom time for the basic level training is one hundred and ten hours; fifty five of which consists of lectures and the other fifty five hours includes hands-on practice exercises in a laboratory.
When the student completes the program, he or she is allowed to take the NREMT examination. In the state of Vermont, certification is only possible through the NREMT and the Department of Health.
During the training course, students will acquire skills that will help them to stabilize and assess the patient, check for pulse and rate of respiration, manage airway blockage, take care of spinal injuries, lift and move the patient from stretcher to ambulance and also to handle emergency childbirth.
