In the state of South Carolina, Emergency Medical Technicians are an asset to the entire state, but vitally to the communities at large. The state of South Carolina follows the EMT curriculum guidelines put into effect since 1994 by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The preliminary EMT-Basic training course has a duration time of about one hundred and thirty nine classroom hours in addition to the mandatory clinical experience as the curriculum course guide specifies. Students can also take the EMT basic refreshing training program, which has a duration time of approximately thirty six hours of classroom time. Students must learn advanced techniques for airway obstruction in addition to the normal refresher training course.

Students who are entering the basic level training program are required to have a high school diploma or GED certificate, must be at least eighteen years of age or older before they take the last class, must be fit physically, must be able to perform all of the EMT required tasks, must meet all other prerequisites that are required by the state and the institution, and must possess a current BSL certificate before receiving the basic level certification by the state of South Carolina.

Students who are going to enter the basic refresher training program in the state of South Carolina must hold a current EMT certification from the state or have an unexpired EMT certification or a permission letter from the EMS office of the state.

All students who want to become officially certified as EMTs and have taken either the basic level training or refresher training must successfully pass the NREMT exam before they can receive the South Carolina state certification. The EMT training program is offered by technical schools, vocational schools and community colleges in the state of South Carolina.
