In the state of Montana, EMTs and Paramedics are required to take the National Registry (NREMT) exam before they can become certified. They have to be enrolled in an approved Emergency Medical Technician training course.
The National Registry exam is computer based. Students have to display the ability to react quickly in certain emergency situations. No student will see the same test questions on the EMT exam. Each test question is adaptive to the student taking the test.
The basic training program allows students the opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge to administer life support methods to the injured person or in an emergency situation where the person is ill. With this knowledge and skills, individuals will have a chance to save more lives. Students that complete the training course have to go on to successfully pass the National Registry, but then the students have to approach the Board of Medical Examiners in the state of Montana for the certificate. Being accepted by this board is very competitive and limited.
For each Paramedic that enters training, a valid EMT license is required including proof of health insurance policy. In addition, the candidate must successfully pass the entrance exam, interview, criminal background check as well as the screening process.
Basic training involves a six credit hour course. This entails work in the classroom and practical exercises. Students will learn how to assess patients, stabilize the patient, and provide emergency treatment. Upon completion of both the basic and intermediate courses, students will be qualified to take the paramedic training course. However, they must hold a certification from the National Registry.
