Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics are considered to be first responders to an accident scene or at the home of an injured person. The first person that comes on the scene will be able to identify and assess the situation quickly. These skills are what the training program provides to all EMTs and Paramedics.

The first responder will be able to provide immediate treatment to the person whose life is threatened. The first responder will be able to clear blocked airways, stop bleeding, stabilize the patient and provide further help for the injury or illness while waiting for the ambulance to arrive on the scene. An individual who demonstrates the knowledge and who has completed the required training for assessing, helping and providing immediate medical care to a patient is ready to receive the appropriate certification or license.

For the basic level EMT training course, students have to complete several house of classroom instruction including the introduction of the course, several hours of preparing for the class, lessons in airway obstruction, lessons in assessing and evaluating patients, lessons in blood circulation, lessons about various expected illnesses and injuries, lessons in childbirth during an emergency and other emergency lessons. The student is then required to complete and successfully pass a practical and written exam.

In the state of Mississippi, to qualify for certification, students must be 18 years old or older. They must provide written verification that they have completed the first responder training course and must be registered at the state level as a first responder.

The EMT must have done training that includes operating specific devices such as a defibrillator and oxygen tank.  All EMTs can do refresher training classes to either prepare for the National Registry exam or to go back over various sections of the basic training. These refresher courses usually last for two days or less.

In the state of Mississippi, the training program and EMT exam is mandated by the Office of Emergency Planning and Response (OEPR). The exam is given four times each year at specific locations.
