The Department of Community Health is the state entity that provides the license and certification for EMTs and Paramedics in the State of the Michigan.

Whether you are a resident of Detroit, Grand Rapids, Warren, Sterling Heights or anywhere else in the state of Michigan, the information below should be relevant for what you need.

EMTs and Paramedics are certified using three options. All of these options do require completion of the Emergency Medical Technician and Paramedic training course. The student must pass the required practical exam successfully. After the EMT receives the appropriate certification, the EMT must continue to pursue an education in the EMT field to improve his or her ability to continue providing emergency medical care.

The candidate who is applying for an EMT license in the state of Michigan must consider applying by successfully passing the approved exam, applying by an endorsement from a reputable individual in the community and applying by passing the National Registry exam.

After the student completes several hours of training which includes lecture and lab work, the student will apply for certification by sitting the state exam. The student cannot apply for license by exam if an approved training course is not completed.

Students who apply for the certification must have a similar level of certification in another state. This is the kind of endorsement that the state of Michigan will consider to be reliable in providing certification to the applicant.

If a student completes the EMT training course in another state and successfully passes the approved exam, then that licensee will be on the National Registry list. This means that the state of Michigan can access this list and grant certification to the individual. This also allows the individual to pursue advanced EMT training such as becoming a paramedic.

If someone wants to take EMT training in the State of Michigan, the state provides an approved list of schools that you can select from. They are listed by each county in the state.
