Medical emergencies present a particularly powerful threat to someone’s life or well being. In some cases, injury or death will even take place. In the state of Massachusetts, the EMT training is supervised by the Office of Emergency Medical Services, which is known as OEMS. This office is the one that organizes the training of the Emergency Medical Technician and help them to learn how to deal with medical emergency situations.
According to the Office of Health and Human Services in the state of Massachusetts, there are three levels of EMT training for students interested in pursuing a career as an EMT. The three levels consist of
- EMT- Basic,
- EMT-Intermediate and
- Paramedic.
The goal of the EMT basic training is to provide a learning environment that instructs students on how they can improve the emergency care services for individuals who may have experienced an accident or unexpected illness.
The EMT basic training course consists of classroom time that runs approximately one hundred hours and about ten hours in a hospital setting to observe what happens in an emergency situation. The curriculum for the EMT basic training is overseen and approved using the guidelines of the Federal Department of Transportation. As long as the EMT instructor follows these guidelines, there is no prior need of EMT experience or training.
EMTs must meet specific requirement in order to be accepted in any training courses. These requirements include:
- The ability to read and write
- Must be at least 18 years or older
- Must not have any type of mental condition
- Must not be addicted to drugs
- The ability to carry 125 pounds
After the EMT completes the basic training successfully, it is time to take the office EMT exam. Upon passing the EMT exam, the student will receive the appropriate certification.
