In the state of Maryland, there are three certification levels in EMT training,
- Basic EMT,
- Intermediate EMT and
- Paramedic.
Each of these levels of training requires several training hours in order to receive certification.
The candidate has to also successfully pass an exam after training has been completed. In the grand scheme of things, all of these EMT levels of training and certification serve the same goal, which is assessing the patient, managing the patient’s care and making sure that the patient gets medical assistance in the soonest possible time frame.
EMT and Paramedic candidates in the state of Maryland are mandatory required to finish an EMT training course that is approved by the Emergency Medical Services Board of the state. The EMT basic training course consists of 131 hours of training and the Paramedic training course consists of approximately 1,100 hours. The First Responder and the Cardiac Rescue Technician are also additional levels of training that the state of Maryland recognizes much more than other states.
In the state of Maryland, most approved EMT training schools and the classes offered lasts for approximately one semester while the intermediate training course lasts for two semesters. The student has to complete the EMT basic level training before moving on to the intermediate level training course for EMTs.
The training classes offered to EMTs in the State of Maryland consists of lectures by approved instructors as well as lab classes that provide instructions to students on how they should react in an emergency situation including the quick assessment and management of the patient while transporting the patient to a hospital facility.
