Emergency Medical Technicians are also known as EMTs. Both EMTs and Paramedics are first responders to an accident scene or to a situation where the patient is undergoing an emergency such as a stroke, cardiac arrest and asthmatic attack.

In the state of Louisiana, students are required to meet a specific standard in order to go through training; some of which are:
- Age limit – at least 18 years
- Education – GED or high school diploma
- Physical Health
Emergency Medical Technician are taught, during training, to treat injuries, stabilize the patient, transport the patient safely to the hospital or medical facility as well as assessing the patient accurately.
Paramedics, however, undergo a more advanced training than the EMT does. Paramedics must be able to administer the patient’s medication, escort the patient safely to the emergency room or medical facility; be able to provide medical details about the patient to the doctor and the nurse at the hospital.
In the state of Louisiana, EMT students must pass a state approved examination supervised by the Department of Transportation. However, the student is allowed to take the National Registry Examination in order to receive certification and licensure in another state. When the student successfully passes the National Registry Examination that is when the certificate and the license will be awarded. Upon passing the exam, the individual will receive a NREMT EMT card that must be copied and sent along with the EMT application to the state of Louisiana EMT.
The basic level EMT training program provides information to students about how they can save the lives of the patient. Various techniques are taught including CPR. Students will learn how to apply bandages to injuries as well as splints and backboards. The student needs to do 150 hours of classroom time in addition to 24 hours of clinical time.
