Whether you are in Idaho Falls, Twin Falls, Ketchum, Pocatello or anywhere else in Idaho, the information outlined below should be of use to you.

Students pursuing any of these types of certification must go through a training program approved by the state of Idaho.

  • The minimum required hours of training for a first responder is 52 hours.
  • The minimum required hours of training for an EMT is 110 hours.

If the student already has certification as an EMT, then training will reduce to 70 hours. The student who is interested in pursuing a training program as an advanced EMT must have completed the basic first responder training course first and then an additional 60 hours of training. The person who wants to pursue the paramedic training has to complete the advanced EMT training and receive certification; after which an additional 1,000 hours of training is required.

After training is completed, the EMT must take the National Registry examination and successfully pass it. The first responder exam has about 110 questions and a demonstrative skill test. The EMT is similar, but with 120 questions while the paramedic has to complete 150 questions along with the skill element.

Those in the state of Idaho who are interested in applying for their EMR (first responder) and EMT certificate must be 16 years or older, but with parental consent. Those pursuing the advanced EMT and Paramedic certificate must be 18 years or older.

All Idaho applicants for the EMT certification must complete and successfully pass a criminal history check before they can be certified.

All EMR and EMT certificates are official for three years from when they were issued. After this time has expired, they have to be renewed. The Advanced EMT and Paramedic certificates are valid for two years; after which they have to be renewed.
