An Emergency Medical Technician is the person that provides emergency medical care services to patients before taking them to the hospital. Hawaii, like other states, calls for an Emergency Medical Technician or a Paramedic to finish an emergency medical training program that is approved by the state. This is a pre-requisite of the certification procedure. To become an EMT, students must pass the National Registry Examination, which is a written assessment of whether the student should be certified or not after receiving training. Students must also hold a recent CPR certificate.
Students begin the training process by taking the basic level course. They will acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to provide emergency care to patients who have a life threatening situation or condition. It is the EMT’s duty to take the patient to the hospital safely while applying basic treatment such as CPR, clearing blocked airways, control bleeding, shock treatment, bandaging injuries and wounds, treating poison and burns; assisting in childbirth and managing individuals who have a mental condition.
The EMT intermediate course covers all of the basic level training modules and other advanced emergency methods in first aid and CPR. Prior experience in emergency medical care is helpful.
The student that wants to pursue becoming a paramedic must have completed the basic and intermediate training courses. They will receive training in advanced life saving methods. Students will learn how to administer an IV, how to give medication, how to use a defibrillator.
The EMT training in Hawaii conducts hands-on exercises to teach students how to use the normal equipments associated with emergency situation such as backboards, stretchers, splint, oxygen tanks and suction devices.
Hawaii Emergency Medical Services is responsible for the EMT training in Hawaii and most approved training programs lasts for a mandatory six months.
