In the State of Connecticut, approved training involves three levels;
- EMT basic level,
- EMT intermediate level and
- EMT paramedic level.
The basic level allows the student to successfully complete a program that will result in EMT entry level jobs.
The intermediate and paramedic level are usually done through paid employment and on-the-job training. EMT’s in the state of Connecticut are motivated to advancement from one level to the next.
The basic level training in the state of Connecticut will probably last for about six months. During the training, EMT students are required to learn how to stop bleeding, handle patients who have fractures, assisting the patient who is experiencing cardiac arrest and childbirth.
Students will learn how to administer oxygen, use suction devices, and apply backboards and splints as well as how to place patient on stretcher. Before the end of the training course, the EMT student will be given the opportunity to ride in the ambulance to see a real life emergency situation.
The Office of Emergency Medical Services oversees the EMT training in state of Connecticut. There are a lot of Connecticut community colleges that require students to complete a six month EMT training course.
Students will be fully certified as an EMT after they successfully complete the National Registry examination after training.
