In the state of Colorado, emergency professionals are trained at all emergency levels including paramedics. The Public Health Department in Colorado presides over all of the emergency medical and trauma services including EMT’s and Paramedics.
The state of Colorado has a specific requirement that all EMT’s must have certification in CPR prior to applying for EMT training. The students must have recognizable identification to verify that they live in the state of Colorado.
There are three levels of certification;
- EMT-Basic,
- EMT-Intermediate and
- EMT-Advanced (Paramedic).
The basic level course usually is a credit course at a community college. This includes both classroom coursework and clinical teaching. Those who graduate from this training course are now ready to take the required examination for successful certification. The student must be able to understand ambulance, emergency room and hospital services.
In the intermediate EMT training course, students will learn skills related to the basic level in addition to more advanced procedures. Upon graduating from this training course, students will be prepared to understand all the nuances of emergency services.
The final level of the EMT training course is even more advanced. The student’s goal in this course is to become a Paramedic. This student should be able to provide emergency care to the injury or the sick. The student entering this training should obtain both the basic and intermediate level certification.
