EMT Basic Training
EMT’s, or Emergency Medical Technicians, play a very important role in the community. They are usually the first on the scene in an emergency situation and as such, need to be ready for anything and any kind of situation. EMTs need to assess the patient and provide emergency medical attention to stabilize the patient. It is a rewarding and challenging career which requires extensive training.
EMT Basic Training
This the first level of EMT training and as its name suggests, it is the most basic level. It is a requirement to complete this course so you are certified to perform pre-hospital emergency care. Before you can apply, you will need the following:
- High school diploma
- Valid CPR credentials
- Must be over the age of 18
You will learn basic EMT skills such as
- how to assess a patient
- how to give CPR
- setting a broken bone
- identifying cardiac and respiratory issues
- how to deliver a baby
- what to do in a choking situation
- how to stop excessive bleeding
You will also learn about ethical and legal issues surrounding patient care. This is an important component of the course.
In addition to face to face classroom time, you will also spend some time in real emergency departments and even time in real life ambulance calls. This is to get you exposure to real life emergency situations.
You will also learn how to use the various tools needed by an EMT. These include the following:
- stretchers,
- backboards,
- stethoscopes,
- respirator/oxygen devices, and
- other items.
There are other components to the course which vary from state to state. So, depending on which state you live in, will determine exactly what you are required to know.
In order to successfully pass this basic training you will need to pass a written and practical exam by either the state or the NREMT (national registry of emergency medical technicians).
